2023 Family Physician of the Year

Mark Goodman, MD, From Omaha, Nebraska, Named the 2023 Family Physician of the Year

The Family Physician of the Year award is given annually to a Family Physician who exemplifies a compassionate commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people and communities throughout Nebraska. Dr. Mark Goodman was honored at the State Capitol on December 4, 2023.

Dr. Mark Goodman has been practicing Family Medicine in Nebraska for 31 years. A native of Newman Grove, Dr. Goodman completed his undergraduate and medical school training at the University of Nebraska. He completed his Family Medicine residency training at Rush University. He has been a faculty member at Creighton University since 1994.  

Dr. Goodman has served on the Nebraska Board of Medicine since 2016 and has been the President since 2018. He has also served on the Rural Health Advisory Commission and the Governor’s Task Force for Medicaid Reform. Dr. Goodman has been a member of the NAFP since 1985 and was recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1997. He has given numerous presentations at the NAFP Scientific Assembly. He is an expert in HIV care, hospice care, opioid management and prevention of opioid abuse, and care for LGBTQ persons. Dr. Goodman, in partnership with pharmacy and gastroenterology colleagues, developed hepatitis C screening and treatment protocols that enabled hundreds of people to be treated and cured in the office of their family physician.  

Early in his practice, Dr. Goodman spent two years practicing in Kenya and Sudan. He has also worked with the Medical Reserve Corps, served as a mentor in service trips to Red Cloud Indian School at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and traveled back to South Sudan to help develop their healthcare workforce. Dr. Goodman has received numerous awards, including the Five Star Excellence Award, the Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Humanism in Medicine Award. He has also given presentations at the local, regional, and national level.  

Dr. Goodman has worked tirelessly in the inpatient and outpatient setting. He is an exceptional role model to residents and students. He cares for numerous patients in long-term care facilities and still performs home visits. When COVID hit, Dr. Goodman’s creativity and determination helped his practice continue to see patients, screen the community, and care for each other.  

Dr. Goodman is an outstanding physician who is dedicated to his patients. He is a strong advocate for his patients and is always willing to go the extra mile for them. He is also a great teacher and mentor. He is always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with others. He is a true asset to the Nebraska medical community and is an inspiration to his colleagues and students.
